Steel Valley Nationals Moving

Whether it was the Hot Rod Super Nationals or the Steel Valley Nationals, the Canfield Fairgrounds has hosted a big car show each year for about two decades. Now the show is moving, but it's still staying here in the valley.

The Steel Valley Nationals are on the move from their traditional home in Canfield to the Quaker City Raceway outside of Salem.

“From the participants, they are just happy the event is going on the feedback that we've received about the raceway is that people are excited it’s coming to town,” said Corey Ward of Ward Productions.

And while the event is famous for its cars and crowds, it’s also well known for its traffic, but event organizers say they don't expect those problems in Salem.

“We're gonna try and keep that in Boardman as much as we possibly can. We feel people will still migrate back to Boardman but it also depends on the city of Salem and how involved they would like to be,” Ward said.

“I don't really know what the pros and cons are gonna be until we have it in our community and see what happens,” said Salem Mayor Larry DeJane.

DeJane says he's not sure what to expect. He knows the event will bring some money into his town--but isn't so sure about the traffic or the hassles.

“I'm looking forward to it. I wouldn't say we're against it other than we have to see what it is like. The dragstrip brings in people for sure but not that magnitude of people,” said DeJane.

The Steel Valley Nationals at the Quaker City Raceway kick off the weekend of June 23.

As in the past the event will remain low cost. Admission will be $5, and it will cost $25 to enter your car in the show.
